There are many magical aspects in the movie, “Like Water for Chocolate.” When Tita cooks food for her family and the guests, she is very emotional. Her tears drop into the food. When the guests eat, they all begin to cry. Somehow, her emotions and feelings reach the guests. Everyone feels the way Tita feels when they eat dinner. Next, like in “The Sixth Sense,” a ghost communicates with Tita. Her dead mother haunts her and puts a curse on her. Also, towards the end of the film, Pedro dies, while making love to Tita. At this point Tita begins to eat matches, and they die together. These two people that love each other so much are able to die in each others arms. This reminds me of “Romeo and Juliet,” and “The Notebook.” All are forbidden loves. The parents of these individuals do not approve of their significant other, yet their bonds are so strong, that they leave life together as one.
In the movie, “Like Water for Chocolate”, the magical realism aspects that I saw present in the movie was Tita’s ability to put her emotions in the food that she cooked. For example, when Tita had cried in the baking mixture, it caused everyone who ate the cake to be very ill. Everyone who ate the cake began vomiting and a servant close to Tita had died. Another example was when Tita cooked with love and rose petals. It made the food Tita cooked for dinner taste extraordinary, especially to Pedro.
There are many connections that can be made from “Like Water for Chocolate” because it has a common story line where two people are in love and cannot be together for different circumstances, particularly family reasons. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet cannot be together because their families are rivals. Similar to “Like Water for Chocolate”, the lovers end up dying and the men in both have rivals who are trying to marry the two women. Also, both women, Juliet and Tita, end up killing themselves for love, demonstrating the significance and power of love for “Like Water for Chocolate” and Romeo and Juliet.
There are plenty of examples of magical realism in "Like Water for Chocolate". The first aspect that I noticed was that TIta was able to use her cooking abilities to effect the mood of other people. When she was cooking the wedding cake for her sister's wedding she starts to cry in the batter. She cries in the cake batter because Pedro is marrying her older sister even though he loves her and she loves him. After the cake is served people start to vomit. They can feel her pain that she is suffering and that is why they begin to vomit. When Tita cooks for her mother it makes her feel good and happy that she has such a great meal. Another aspect of magical realism is that Tita begins to eat matches after she notices that Pedro died. It didn't make sense how Pedro died in the first place and how Tita caught on fire even though the matches weren't lit. This movie reminded me of Love in the Time of Cholera because Tita didn't get to marry Pedro because it was tradition that she could not get married. Florentino didn't get to be with Fermina because her father made her marry Juvenal Urbino. In both of the stories Tita and Florentino had to wait for the individuals that they loved.
There are many magical aspects in the movie “Like Water for Chocolate”. When Tita was cooking food, she cooked it with a lot of emotion and feelings. These emotions, however, affected the food that was eaten by the guest. For example, when Tita was making the wedding cake for her sister and Pedro’s wedding, she made it with hatred and sadness that she began to cry. Her tears fell into the batter and had a vomiting and crying effect on the guests eating the cake. Another time is when she made food with love and passion that the guests went home with their dates early. This magical aspect reminds of the movie, Simply Irresistible. In this movie, a woman is the chef of her own restaurant. The feelings she had while creating the food gave the same feelings to the people who ate the food. For example, she created the man’s food with love while she made the other woman’s food with hatred. The man loved the food and the woman started to act all crazy and bizarre. The man didn’t really pay close attention because he was hypnotized by the wonderful food. Another magical aspect is when Tita’s mother’s ghosts arrived. Her mother still tries to control Tita when she’s even dead. This aspect reminds me of the Sixth Sense when ghosts appear to Cole.
After watching Like Water for Chocolate for the very first time I was very shocked about the storyline. During the movie I could pick out several magical realism aspects. an example was how Tita would cook her food out of love and care. As a result when people ate the food they could feel a sense of passion and love. Since Tita couldn't be with Pedro a way of expressing her love for him was through her food. Another part of the movie was when Tita made the cake for her sisters wedding. The night before she was crying because she couldn't marry Pedro. As a result after people ate the cake they started to cry and become sick because Tita was love sick and cried a lot. The last part of the movie was when Tita and Pedro finally were able to express their love for each other. After Pedro finally has his way with Tita he ends up dying because the love was so strong between them that it led to both of there deaths. In conclusion this movie provides numerous aspects of magical realism.
The birth of Tita in the movie Like Water for Chocolate shows the beginning aspects of magical realism. As her mother was chopping onions in the kitchen, her water broke and gave birth to Tita on top of the kitchen table. This was no ordinary birth because right after Tita was conceived, water flooded the kitchen. This might symbolize the tears of her mother while she was chopping up onions before Tita's birth. As Tita gets older she grows up around the kitchening cooking. One day she meets a man named Pedro who falls in love with him but is forbbidden to have any romantic relationship. This is due to her mother's family tradition of the youngest child sacrificing marriage to take care of her family. Tita's cooking was the only way to express her emotions and opportunity to let out her feelings. When people ate the food she prepared whatever she was feeling when she cooked it, they felt the same way. When this occured, I automatically thought of a movie called Irresistable made in 1999 starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. A department store executive named Flanery tries to resist falling in love with a young woman who he believes has possessed magical powers after inheriting a restaurant. What ever she felt went into her food and when they ate it they felt the same way. I thought this movie to be the remake of Like Water for Chocolate. I loved this movie a lot and enjoyed the first half of Like Water for Chocolate but the last bit of the ending disappointed me. I thought it was very weird that Pedro died right after him and Tita finished making love and shortly after she commited suicide.
Like water for choclate has magical realism apects in it. At the end when her and pedro were making love and pedro dies while climaxing inside of her and by her eating the matches is very magical because its very rare that people die while having sex( not normal ) and someone eating matches. oh yeah, the mom dying and becoming a ghost and by her burning pedro for tita bad behavior. Honestly, as i was watching the movie i didnt have a clue what was going on but then i realized that we are watching a magical realism movie
